Ambrose Drive

Didsbury, Manchester

A two-storey side extension, internal remodelling and garden office to a semi- detached 1930s house in Didsbury.

The proposed massing of the extension has been carefully considered both in respect to the existing house and the surrounding context.

The ridge height of the proposed side extension is set lower than the main house, and is set back from the front elevation in order to clearly distinguish the addition from the original dwelling. An asymmetrical gable, combined with the stepped eaves to the frontage, generates a massing and form which resonates with the distinct character and roofscapes of the surrounding context.

At ground floor, a newly remodelled kitchen and dining space open onto a landscaped deck arranged around an existing silver birch tree. This deck leads to a new home office set within the rear of the garden and steps down onto a lawn.

A first floor, an additional en-suite bedroom is created with a feature window positioned on the gable of the new building, providing views and an active frontage to the side street.
