Mistry Swire architects' Studio
Cheadle Village, Stockport
The unit was formerly a newsagents and had been unoccupied for some time. We repaired and restored the exterior, painting the existing shopfront and windows and adding new signage.
Inside, a plywood-lined wall and window cill provide a surface for drawings, models and materials to be displayed. A large old oak table with low lighting makes for a spacious and comfortable meeting space and an area for practical work.
This refurbishment exemplifies our approach; making only necessary changes and selecting readily available, cost-effective materials and fittings that are functional as well as attractive. Much of the work was done by us, with the help of local tradespeople, family and friends.
Our friends and colleagues have benefitted from the shared use and flexibility of our studio. We’re also really excited by the potential for
the space to serve the local community, in enabling people to engage with architecture and creating a space for occasional exhibitions and meetings.
