Thornleigh

Hale, Altrincham

A single-storey side and rear extension to a Victorian house in the Hale Conservation area.

The design features a new side entrance porch, which has been carefully detailed to be sympathetic to the existing period house and street scene. At the rear, a new open-plan kitchen space steps down into a light-filled orangery which opens onto the garden. A connecting walled courtyard garden, to the side of the property, allows westerly light to penetrate deep into the kitchen at the heart of the house.

The proposed materials consist of polychromatic patterned brickwork, pale stonework and traditional timber windows and doors, which complement the character of the main house.

The new elements respond and enhance the traditional qualities of the existing house while providing contemporary, light-filled spaces which connect with the garden.
